book review

In this book Professor Tom Saldeen, MD, PhD, a leading expert on fish oils, describes the recent discoveries about the influence of fish oils on the human body. There is much to indicate that most of us have a deficiency of the favorable fatty acids found in fish oil. This deficiency can lead to many different diseases. With a tablespoon of fish oil daily you can improve your health and well-being and reduce the risk for atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction, among other conditions.

In the book he describes how early observations of a low incidence of heart disease among the Eskimos have led, through intensive research, to the current knowledge. According to new research, fish oil seems to prevent such differing conditions as sudden cardiac death, high blood pressure, thrombosis and joint diseases, and in addition makes the skin more supple and smooth. The book also deals with the classical question of whether one becomes more intelligent by eating fish.

BOOK REVIEW

by Helen Kimber BSc (Hons) PGCE, ECNP

Professor Tom Saldeen is very well qualified to write a book on the health benefits of omega-3 fish oils, as he has spent many years researching the effects these fats have on our health.

This compact, easy to read and understand book is a compilation and brief overview of the studies on the health effects of stable fish oils, carried out by Professor Saldeen and his team at Uppsala University in Sweden.

Professor Saldeen takes the reader through the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in various populations and explains why Eskimos living a traditional lifestyle do not succumb to this world-wide health problem.

The biochemistry of different fatty acids is explained in an easy to understand format as well as the physiological effects of the omega-3 fats on our bodies.

The reader is taken through a series of studies involving natural stable fish oil. It is refreshing to see so much evidence, which is often lacking in the field of nutrition, and which is essential to back up the efficacy and usefulness of a nutritional supplement.

With its comprehensive list of references, this book will be an important resource to patients who wish to consider supplementing their diet with fish oil, and to practitioners who wish to use fish oil in nutritional regimes for their patients.
